When to contact the Healthy Start Field Office and when to contact the California Department of Education regarding Healthy Start

In many cases either the Healthy Start Field Office (HSFO) or the California Department of Education (CDE) can answer general questions about Healthy Start. However, some questions can be more appropriately answered by one office or the other.

When to call the Healthy Start Field Office:
Our office is the place to call with "how-to" questions and issues related to actual implementation of comprehensive school-linked services at the local level, such as:

  • Working through local collaborative and interagency issues
  • Identifying and coordinating appropriate local outcomes with evaluation requirements
  • Assessing community strengths and weaknesses
  • Designing a system for supporting and following up with individuals and families
  • Staffing and managing your Healthy Start site
  • Sustaining your Healthy Start relationships and commitments
  • Locating resource materials to aid in your work
Our staff have direct experience and expertise in a range of areas including: consulting, site operations and coordination, case management, evaluation, data systems, research, working with diverse communities, and the collaborative process. If we can't help you directly, we will work with you to identify other state or local resources that can be of assistance. When to call the California Department of Education

It will be more efficient for you to contact the CDE directly at 916 319-0914 or by e-mail to healthystart@cde.ca.gov when looking for technical assistance or information on the topics below:

  • Healthy Start Grant Process
    • Grant disbursements and fiscal reporting requirements, including Annual Expenditure Reports
    • Annual Sustainability Report requirements and deadlines
    • Assistance in aligning resources, strategies, and success measures with identified needs
    • Grant awards process (Currently there is no funding for new grants.)
  • LEA Medi-Cal Billing Option

  • Legislation and Policy
    • State policy related to comprehensive school-linked services
    • Legislation and related documents, policies, requirements and procedures
