Join edweek.org for a discussion on the role of community organizations, social workers, health care providers, and other groups in helping to improve the lives of students in the nation's low-performing public schools, a topic that has taken on renewed interest in this presidential campaign season.
Under an effort called the Community Agenda for America's Public Schools (http://www.thecommunityagenda.org/), this coalition is calling for more partnerships between public schools and local community groups, health-care providers, and other resource groups that aim to improve the lives of poor families, especially in the nation's urban core and rural pockets.
About the Guest: Martin J. Blank is the executive director of the Washington-based Coalition for Community Schools (http://www.communityschools.org/), an organization of local, state, and national partners that is leading a drive to focus the national debate over how to best improve academic performance and close the achievement gap by addressing what happens outside the classroom.
